THE 2026 THEORY TEST MASTERCLASS

SECTION 1: THE 2026 LIFE-SAVERS (NEW RULES)

In 2026, the DVSA has prioritized roadside survival. You will be asked about these.

1. The CPR Protocol

If you are first on the scene of an accident and find an unresponsive casualty:

  • Call 999 immediately.
  • Check Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for no more than 10 seconds.
  • Chest Compressions: Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest.
  • Depth: Press down 5 to 6 cm.
  • Rate: Perform 100 to 120 compressions per minute (Stayin’ Alive beat).

2. Public Access Defibrillators (AED)

  • Who can use it? Anyone. You do not need medical training.
  • The First Step: Switch it on. The machine will give you clear voice instructions.
  • Safety: Do not stop CPR until the machine tells you to “Stand Clear” to analyze the heart rhythm.

SECTION 2: SMART MOTORWAYS & HIGHWAY CODE

Motorway safety is a major fail point for new drivers.

1. The Red “X” Rule

  • A Red “X” on a gantry means the lane is closed.
  • Law: You must not drive in a lane showing a Red “X”. It is often closed because of a breakdown or emergency workers ahead.
  • Penalty: Automatic fine and 3 points on your license.

2. Stopping Distances (The Cheat Sheet)

  • Dry Roads: 2-second gap.
  • Wet Roads: 4-second gap (double the gap).
  • Icy Roads: 20-second gap (ten times the gap).

SECTION 3: THE HAZARD PERCEPTION “SECRET”

The Hazard Perception test uses CGI clips. To pass, you must understand the Scoring Window.

  • Potential Hazard: A cyclist riding on the pavement. (Scan, but don’t click yet).
  • Developing Hazard: The cyclist wobbles and starts to veer into the road. (CLICK NOW).
  • The “3-Click” Technique: To ensure you hit the scoring window, click once when you see a potential hazard, once when it develops, and once more a second later just in case you were too early.

SECTION 4: DOCUMENT & LAW QUICK-FIRE

  • SORN: Statutory Off-Road Notification. Use this if you aren’t driving or taxing the car. It lasts until the vehicle is taxed, sold, or scrapped.
  • MOT: Cars need their first MOT when they are 3 years old.
  • Insurance: “Third Party” only covers the other person’s car and property. It does not cover your own car.

SECTION 5: FINAL EXAM CHECKLIST

  • [ ] Bring your Provisional Photo Card Licence.
  • [ ] Arrive 15 minutes early (if you’re late, you lose your fee).
  • [ ] Use the 15-minute practice session at the start to get used to the touch screen.
  • [ ] Pass Mark: 43/50 for Questions; 44/75 for Hazards.
