How to Book Your 2026 UK Driving Theory Test
Ready to get your license? Booking your theory test is the first major step toward your full driving pink card. Follow this official 2026 guide to ensure your booking is secure and you are fully prepared for test day.
1. What You Need Before Booking
To book your test through the official GOV.UK service, you must have the following ready:
- A Valid UK Provisional Driving Licence: You need your 16-character licence number.
- An Email Address: To receive your booking confirmation and reference number.
- A Debit or Credit Card: To pay the standard test fee.
- 185-Day Residency: You must have lived in England, Wales, or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months.
2. 2026 Test Fees
The standard costs for booking via the official DVSA portal are:
- Car & Motorcycle Theory Test: £23.
- Lorry & Bus (Part 1a – Multiple Choice): £26.
- Lorry & Bus (Part 1b – Hazard Perception): £11.
Warning: Beware of unofficial “booking agent” websites that may charge you up to £50 or more for a £23 test. Only use the official .gov.uk link.
3. New 2026 Booking & Management Rules
Starting in Spring 2026, the DVSA is introducing stricter rules to prevent slot hoarding and ensure fairness:
- Limited Changes: You are now only allowed to change your test appointment 2 times. If you need to change it again, you must cancel and rebook.
- Location Restrictions: You can only move your test to a centre near your original booking.
- Personal Bookings: Only the learner driver can book or manage the test; instructors will no longer be able to manage these for you from later in Spring 2026.
4. What to Take on Your Test Day
You must bring your physical UK photocard provisional driving licence to the test centre.
- No Licence = No Test: If you forget it, your test will be cancelled, and you will not get a refund.
- Vision: Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving.
- Arrival: Aim to arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes early.
5. How to Prepare for a First-Time Pass
Don’t waste your £23 fee by going unprepared. We recommend:
- Mock Exams: Take our free 50-Question Road Signs Test and our Car Masterclass.
- The Official Kit: Study using the Official 2026 DVSA Theory Test Kit to see the exact types of questions used in the exam.
- Pass Guarantee: Ensure you are consistently scoring at least 43 out of 50 on practice tests before booking your date.
